Alan Tough M31 4-5th November 2008

alantoughm3145thnovember2008.jpg

This has been a very difficult processing job. I tried every which way - including loose! I've ended up with the attached version which, I think, looks the most natural. Total imaging time was over an hour, but there was some thin cloud passing over which caused some "smudging" on the sub-frames. As well as M31, you can also see the satellite galaxies M32 (bottom-right) and M110/NGC 205 (centre-left), as well as the star cloud NGC 206, which is within the spiral arm (bottom-left).

Imaging equipment: Sky-Watcher 80ED, HEQ5 mount, Canon EOS 300D at prime focus, Astronomik CLS filter. Exposure details: 6 x 12-minute sub-frames @ f/7.5, ISO-800. Guiding equipment: Sky-Watcher 100ED, StarShoot Autoguider.
